Origins and Vision
Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Founding Master of Fo Guang Shan, devoted his life to the noble ideal of “cultivating talents through education.” He regarded education as a profound and transformative force—one that purifies the human mind, benefits society, and opens the way toward a brighter future.
Guided by his great vision of “Fo Guang Shan Million-Member Fundraising Campaign,” Fo Guang Shan has, since 1991, successively founded the University of the West in the United States, Nanhua University and Fo Guang University in Taiwan, Nan Tien University in Australia, and Guang Ming College in the Philippines. In 2011, these institutions were formally brought together as the Fo Guang Shan University Consortium, establishing a new and inspiring model of transnational collaboration in higher education for Chinese communities around the world.
Venerable Master Hsing Yun often emphasized that the mission of higher education is to cultivate students who possess great knowledge, great virtue, great compassion, and a commitment to the Great Way. He envisioned universities as places where truth is pursued, wisdom is shared, talent is nurtured, and the well-being of humanity is advanced.
In his view, the role of a university extends far beyond the transmission of knowledge. It bears the enduring responsibility of preserving the wisdom of the past while inspiring future generations, enlightening society through education, and nurturing individuals who possess a global perspective, deep humanistic values, and a strong sense of social responsibility. Such graduates, he believed, would become compassionate leaders and responsible citizens, dedicated to serving both their communities and the wider world.
Inspired by Venerable Master Hsing Yun's vision for higher education, the Fo Guang Shan University Presidents Forum was inaugurated in 2016, bringing together university presidents, distinguished scholars, educational leaders, and experts in Buddhist studies from around the world to foster dialogue, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas.
By 2025, the Forum had welcomed more than one hundred university presidents representing over seventy universities from more than twenty countries. Through in-depth discussions on topics ranging from higher education governance, international collaboration, character education, and Buddhist thought, to humanistic care and social engagement, the Forum has steadily evolved into one of the world's leading platforms for academic exchange and institutional collaboration in the field of Buddhist higher education.
The Eighth Fo Guang Shan University Presidents Forum will be held from 9 to 11 November 2026, jointly hosted by the Office of Fo Guang Shan Universities Consortium and Nanhua University. Centered on the theme, "The Awakening of Universities: Value-Driven Leadership, Sustainable Practice, and Digital Transformation in a New Geopolitical Era," the Forum will explore four interconnected pillars: Intellectual Leadership, Digital Transformation, Sustainable Practice, and Global Engagement.
Against the backdrop of the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, the global pursuit of sustainable governance, the emergence of healthy aging societies, and the shifting dynamics of geopolitics, the Forum seeks to address both the challenges and opportunities confronting higher education today.
Through this gathering, we aspire to bring together the collective wisdom of higher education leaders from around the world to reimagine a values-driven model of university governance. Together, we will deepen international collaboration, strengthen the cultivation of future talent, foster the harmonious integration of artificial intelligence with humanistic values, advance universities' social responsibility and sustainable development, and work collectively toward shaping the university of the future—one founded upon the enduring values of compassion, wisdom, well-being, and sustainability.
Finally, as Venerable Master Hsing Yun profoundly affirmed:
"We hope that universities will embrace the mission of carrying forward the wisdom of the past while inspiring future generations. More importantly, we hope that universities will shoulder the responsibility of educating and enlightening society."
In this era of unprecedented global transformation, the 2026 Fo Guang Shan University Presidents Forum remains steadfast in its commitment to education as its aspiration, compassion as its foundation, and wisdom as its guiding light. Together with our international partners in Buddhist higher education, we look forward to advancing meaningful dialogue, strengthening global collaboration, and shaping a shared vision for the sustainable future of humanity.
May this Forum continue to inspire universities around the world to become beacons of wisdom, compassion, innovation, and sustainability, contributing to a more peaceful, inclusive, and flourishing world for generations to come.
